Smith's book offers a fascinating rethinking of Reconstruction and the Age of Emancipation by looking at the battles over "unfree labor" that took place in California from the Gold Rush through Chinese Exclusion. She shows that California was anything but a "free state" and that its diversity of labor systems mattered on the ground in California as well as in national policymaking.

This book provided a lot of good information on California during the Civil War Period and beyond and how its view on race, color, and ethnicity shaped the national debate. My only caveat would be that the editors should have looked more close at the text. A lot of repeat information. So, once you recognize it is a story you read before, just skip over it. Could have saved at least a 1/4 of the book. However, it is worth a read if you are a history buff.

There’s also space in the book to practice and other resources he mentions towards the end of the book. And he provides extra worksheets on his site. If you’re looking for hefty historical content of this writing system, you may need to look elsewhere. And good luck.

I am truly disappointed by the quality of this book's content. Its tone is informal, its treatment of the topic shallow. At the end of the book, it even lists links to Baybayin tattoo websites; how can it be anything other than commercial?

I purchased this book for academic research. After reading all of its 50 pages without profit, I will need another book.

Of course the writer gave himself 5 stars!! He isn't a dumm...oops, I mean "Idiot". But I would say the "Dummies HR Kit" book is the same price and comes with a nice CD of useful forms and such and was published in Dec 2006 so it is 5 years newer than this book. Some laws change rapidly in HR and it helps to be up to speed with the latest editions.

Just for some balance

Wasn't going to write a review of this, but I felt compelled. The author gave himself 5 stars for a book that I felt was a waste of my money. If you have any higher education or management experience, you need to look elsewhere. If you truly are an "idiot" it might be a good starting point for you. Why would a true idiot need a HRM book, though?

You know that you are I for it before opening the book. It is postcards just hanging on by perforations; so if you do not intend to remove the cards, be careful.

The illustrations by J.C. (I hope JC does not have a religious overtone) Brown are so well designed that I would like larger versions for my library.

The authors must have lived with cats long enough to know cat-think and cat-rules. You will laugh your whiskers off.

About the Author

Max Weber (1864-1920) was one of the founders of contemporary social science and arguably the greatest influence on the evolution of sociology--its theory and historical linkages. His work focused on the areas of the history and theology of religion, political systems, and organizational theory and behavior. He studied at the University of Heidelberg followed by the University of Berlin. After completing his advanced studies, he became professor of economics first at Freiburg University and then at the University of Heidelberg.

There is a small problem with the English-language title of this volume, "Ancient Judaism." Weber produced the studies included in the book in the years leading up to the First World War, in the absence of much the material and textual evidence produced by archeology, and under the influence of the "Higher Criticism," which insisted that texts describing the earlier period were all late inventions. Despite this, he managed to produce a first-rate analysis of the social foundations of Biblical Israel. Not "Judaism," the religion of the synagogue, but rather the life of an ancient people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Indeed, the closing chapters, on the post-exilic period and the emergence of Second-Temple Judaism, are the weakest of the book. This is partly because he insisted on applying his theories of the social role of sects to the religion of the whole population of Persian and Hellenistic Judea, instead of treating it as a national religion fracturing into sects under the pressure of foreign occupation. Nor did Weber have time to reconsider his conclusions, or his presuppositions. "Das Antike Judentum" was published as it stood in 1921; the author's death in 1920 having prevented revisions, or the carrrying out of his planned analyses of Psalms and Job, which might have been included (along with related studies of Talmudic Judaism, and early Christianity, and Islam).

Max Weber was one of the founders of modern sociology, and although his reputation has fluctuated over the decades, his ideas and methods remain basic to sociological discourse, and appear frequently in other fields. It is not surprising that Weber's discussions of pre-Exilic Israel and Judah retain their value. Not greatly concerned with the absolute or relative dating of the texts, he studied them for what they revealed about economic conditions and social roles. A great familiarity with other pre-modern societies replaced Semitic philology or Christian theology as his guides. His brief analysis of the Sabbatical Year and the Jubilee as means of maintaining social equilibrium, and with it the population of free peasants to fill the militia, was based on his knowledge of ancient Greece, but has since found some confirmation in the concerns of early Babylonian rulers to prevent the impoverishment of the military class.

Besides its continuing value as a study of the Biblical period, Weber's "Ancient Judaism" is a particularly good example of his sociological method in action. The source material is readily available to the student, if not already familiar. In this it is unlike his fascinating studies of China and India, in which he not only drew on translations and secondary sources, but on materials not likely to be familiar to most readers, and in some cases is rather difficult to obtain. (Nineteenth-century Indology and Sinology not having a large place in most libraries, for example.) It is therefore much easier to pick up what he left out, what he considered significant, and to decide whether his conclusions now seem warranted by the evidence.

About the Author
Harley Refsal is the author of Whittling Little Folk and Art and Technique of Scandinavian Style Woodcarving. He is a regular contributor to Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. Harvey is an internationally recognized woodcarver who has been decorated by the King of Norway for his contributions to Norwegian culture. A professor of Scandinavian Folk Art, he has taught thousands of carvers his style of flat plan carving, which has become known as the Refsal style.

For my future skill improvement

Good book for those who have more experience than my beginner status. BUT, I got this so I could learn more techniques and I'm quite sure I'll cherish this as my skill improves. Try to get it used unless it's for a gift. I do that whenever offered on Amazon. They are usually a good price and very, very usable, just not new.

This book contains the patterns that were published in 2004 ...

This book contains the patterns that were published in 2004. Most of the patterns are repeated in the new book and the publisher did not tell the buyers about the same patterns. This is silly and I had to buy this one again without knowing it.
That is probably why the publisher did not allow potential buyers to review the content before purchase.Only 4~5 figures are new and 45 others are repeated.

If you have his other books you don't need this one

If you have not had one of Harley Refsal's previous books, then this one is fine. But like other reviewers noted there is very little new about this book. It has several characters not in previous books, but that were in magazines already. This book is disappointing after "Whittling Little Folks" which was all new, and my favorite of his books.

Kiss the book!

Marx' analyses of the parallels between Shakespeare and particular parts of the Bible are astute. The Biblical themes of suffering and redemption, (as in the Pentateuch, the Book of Job, and Revelations, among those discussed by Marx) are such a rich vein throughout Western literature, stemming from its first "book," the Bible, that it is actually odd that more people don't pick up on this aspect of Shakespeare; too often people read him for his sexual politics or Greco-Roman ethics. But Shakespeare is much larger than just these, or the sum of them...
Marx' book is excellent cross analysis in the same style as Harold Bloom and Northrup Frye. You will have a better sense of Shakespeare, The Bible, and your own life and what the hell to do with it after reading this slim but satisfying study. Before or after you read this, check out Northrup Frye's two volume study on the Bible, and virtually everything by Harold Bloom. Also read Herbert Schneidau's "Sacred Discontent," for a full historical analysis of the profound influence of the Bible on Western Culture. Love it or hate it, you've got to understand it.

Poorly written.

(...) I love Shakespeare, and I thought this book would be
informative, but I was sadly mistaken. Marx uses mainly his own
opinion as "proof" of connections between Shakespeare and
the Bible. Of course there are "connections"--Shakespeare
lived in Elizabethan England. But I wouldn't go so far as to compare
King Lear to Job or The Tempest to Revelations. Marx's comparisions
are feable and superficial at best.
He remains unconvincing
throughout the book, which he pitifully tried to force into a format
like Shakespeare's plays. Each chapter is divided into "five
acts." I would have thought an intellectual would have realized
this format was completely wrong for a non-fiction piece.
There are better books out there.
