Fascinating and well-written

This is a fascinating and well-written study of exoticism (as perceived by westerners) in western music. It is written with enough detail for someone who is musically literate but with language and explanations that make it accessible to an ordinary person. Professor Locke examines a wide range of musical examples, from Baroque operas to Carmen and Madame Butterfly, from Mozart's piano "Rondo all turca" to a song popularized by Josephine Baker. He even discusses the music for the Lord of the Rings movies. The theoretically-inclined will be intrigued by his scholarship and paradigms. The rest of us will enjoy his discussion of the various works and the way in which our conception of "the other" has expressed itself in our music.
