GARY TAUBES is cofounder and senior scientific advisor of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He's an award-winning science and health journalist, the author of Why We Get Fat and Good Calories, Bad Calories, and a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for the journal Science. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and Esquire, and has been included in numerous Best of anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). Taubes Delivers Shot Across The Bow Challenging Big Sugar With Facts And History

If an investigative journalist could choose any other career to use their talents and gifts, then it would most likely be that of an attorney. They possess the natural skills for digging deeply into arguments and making compelling statements for the prosecution. That's precisely what New York Times bestselling author and science writer Gary Taubes has done in his soon-to-classic book The Case Against Sugar. This book has been sorely needed for many years and Taubes is the perfect author to articulate what needs to be shared as only he can.

For fans of Taubes who have read his two previous nutritional health classics--Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health and Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It--you already know his position on the negative implications of carbohydrates on the current state of chronic disease and health decline. In The Case Against Sugar, Taubes takes direct aim at the biggest culprit carb that is plaguing the health of those dealing with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and more--it's SUGAR!

Some people might scoff at the idea that we need an entire book all about the dangers of consuming sugar claiming that it's obvious to most people that sugar is not good for you. But do they really know that? Walk into any grocery store, sporting event, amusement park, fast food restaurant, and anywhere else food is sold and you'll mostly see nothing but ambivalence regarding sugar from a great majority of the population based on their purchasing habits. Sugar has become so pervasive in our food supply that it's next to impossible to find anything to eat that doesn't have sugar in it (even spaghetti sauce, baked beans, yogurt, BBQ sauce, ketchup, fruit juice...the list goes on and on!).

As I just noted, sugar has become so ubiquitous in our society now that people don't even think twice about consuming it while simultaneously greatly fearing dietary fat as something they shouldn't consume. Taubes addresses the idea of how we became propagandized to believe fat is the enemy in our diet. Since the publication of The Case For Sugar, we've now learned that The Sugar Association paid off Harvard scientists to squelch the connection between sugar and heart disease and vilify saturated fat. It's fairly easy to see why The Case Against Sugar is needed now more than ever before. (Read the September 12, 2016 New York Times column on this topic entitled "How The Sugar Industry Shifted Blame To Fat": Google the title and you'll find it!)

If you're familiar with the work of Taubes, he goes very deeply into the subjects he writes about to get to the very core of the main issues at hand. He explains how we got to where we are today and puts the primary blame for the main instigator of pretty much all modern disease on sugar. That instigator is a condition known as insulin resistance (IR) where the pancreas has to work so hard at pumping out insulin to cover all the sugar we've been consuming that it's become worn out and doesn't function as it was intended anymore. The result of this is a much more difficult path to keep blood sugar and insulin levels normalized that requires people with IR to have to significantly cut down on the foods that turn to sugar in the body--all culprit carbohydrates. Or, as I like to refer to them, crappy carbage!

One of the excellent points Taubes makes in The Case For Sugar that will hopefully begin a public conversation of this concept is the modern argument against sugar has everything to do with "empty calories" they supposedly contain and not the hormonal effects it is having on our bodies. Bringing in the calorie argument gives license for people to continue eating sugar in the mythical "moderation" (which Taubes is very skeptical and no fan of). But the reality is the role sugar plays in your health goes so much deeper than their caloric effect, particularly for those people with insulin resistance where the damage is done. I know this fact all-too-well as someone who used to drink 16 cans of Coca-Cola daily before discovering these principles Taubes is sharing in his books requiring me to eat a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet for the rest of my life in order to stave off the health consequences of the damage that happened to my body from eating sugar.

Methodically looking through all the faulty science used to defend sugar, Taubes again goes into bulldog mode pulling back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz to expose the facade we have been led to believe about sugar. What's most interesting is there were researchers like John Yudkin who understood these problems with consuming sugar way back in the 60s/70s, but he was quickly ignored and blacklisted by those who wanted to push the anti-fat message as a means for propping up sugar-peddling companies that stood to greatly benefit financially from the ignorance of the general public. And it worked because junk food full of carbohydrates is the norm on store shelves today! Now that we realize that Yudkin was right all along, Taubes is attempting to explain where we go from here to undo all the nutritional indoctrination. It's gonna be a steep uphill battle, but this book could very well be the beginning of the unraveling of the sugar ruse.

The Case Against Sugar should absolutely be required reading of every doctor, dietitian, teacher, parent, and anyone who wants to hear the truth about sugar that they're just not gonna get from mainstream media or any of the so-called leaders in the nutritional health industry. Gary Taubes has put his stamp on this subject as only he can presenting the evidence for the reader to absorb and come to their own conclusions. After reading this book, you can still choose to eat sugar. But at least you'll be armed with information about the entire picture on this subject instead of the one-sided view we've dealt with for the past 50 years. Consider this book the first shot across the bow challenging The Sugar Association head-on with facts and history that cannot be refuted. Now it's simply a matter of undoing decades of misinformation to stem the tide of chronic disease we are currently living through because of the promulgation of sugar.

Reading Taubes' earlier book Good Calories, Bad Calories forever changed the way I see food. The Case Against Sugar was a great refresher that sugar is the main dietary evil I need to root out. Did you know that one of the reasons cigarettes are so addictive is that SUGAR is an ingredient? I didn't either!

Taubes' style is factual with a lot of emphasis on the history of nutritional science. The backstory is fascinating and helps you understand why these facts have not been readily accepted in pop culture or among medical professionals. It can get technical in some parts, but it's not anything a lay person can't understand with careful attention and slow reading. There is no judgement, just facts. Taubes leaves the reader to make application of what he shares.

SUGAR kills

I always think when I read these things that support Dr. Atkins now 40 year old beliefs, that I wish he hadn't died before he was vindicated. Sugar in all it's forms will kill you, will cause inflammation - basically, the more you eliminate it from your life the better off your health will be. Gary Taubes does a great amount of research in this book, like he has his others and shows us how we've been sold a bill of goods and how pervasive the use of sugar is in our foods.

It's a good read, though weighty, if you've been living a low carb, high fat life - he has a lot you can use to shut your detractors down. I recommend reading this, for your own health.

Doyle has a unique way of describing his world with long-winded sentences that engulf your imagination. The tales in the book trace Doyle's experiences and research regarding his son's heart condition and surgery, and it is full of delightful characters that will charm their way into your heart.

About the Author
Olivier De Schutter is the former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food (2008-14) and a member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. A professor at the University of Louvain (UCL) and at the College of Europe and a Member of the Global Law School Faculty at New York University, he has been Visiting Professor at a number of institutions, including Columbia University (2008-13). From 2002 to 2006, he chaired the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights, a high-level group of experts which advised the European Union institutions on fundamental rights issues. He has acted on a number of occasions as expert for the Council of Europe and for the European Union. Between 2004 and 2008, he was the General Secretary of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) on the issue of globalization and human rights.

A Good Introduction and Survey on International Human Rights Law

I bought this book primarily because I am taking the author's online course at edx/Universite Catholique de Louvain. Professor Olivier de Schutter is the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food and Professor of Human Rights at Universite Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. This means that he is a recognized and well respected expert in this area of law and the materials that he puts together in this book confirms his expertise in this area, A majority of the reading materials in his online course are from this book, but naturally, this books offers more reading materials than the course. So, if you plan to take his online course, this book will serve you well.

This book is divided into three main parts with each part subdivided into separate chapters. The entire book is about 967 pages and, yes, it weights a ton--I have been carrying this around everyday for the past 2 months. Part I, The Sources, includes 2 chapters. Chapter 1, The emergency of international human rights, is subdivided into 4 sections. Section 1, The universal level: the United Nations and human rights; Section 2, The regional level; Section 3, The emerging jus commune of human rights; Section 4, Human rights law as part of international law. Chapter 2, States responsibility and 'jurisdiction' includes 4 sections. Section 1, National territory and 'effective control'; Section 2, Extraterritorial obligations under international human rights law; Section 3, The responsibility of states in inter-state cooperation; Section 4, The responsibility of States for the acts of international organizations.

Part II, The Substantive Obligations, includes 4 chapters, which the numbering of the chapters continues from Part 1. So, Chapter 3, The typology of states' obligations and the obligation to respect human rights, includes 3 sections. Section 1, The typology of states obligations; Section2, Rights of an 'absolute' character; Section 3, The regime of rights which may be restricted. Chapter 4, The application of human rights in private relationships and the obligation to protect, includes 2 sections. Section 1, The imputability to the state of the conduct of non-state actors and the obligation to protect; Section 2, Measuring the scope of the obligation to protect. Chapter 5, The progressive realization of human rights and the obligation to fulfill, includes 4 sections. Section 1, The principle; Section 2, Framework laws and action plans; Section 3, Indicators and benchmarks, Section 4 Measuring the obligation of progressive realization. Chapter 6, Derogation in time of public emergency, includes 6 sections. Section 1, First condition: a public emergency which threatens the life of the nation; Section 2, Second condition: the necessity requirement; Section 3, Third condition: the non-discrimination requirement; Section 4, Fourth condition: compliance with other international obligations; Section 5, Fifth condition: rights which are not subject to derogation; Section 6, Sixth condition: international notification. Chapter 7, The prohibition of discrimination, includes 5 sections. Section1, The scope of the requirement of non-discrimination; Section 2, The range of states' obligations; Section 3, The notion of discrimination; Section 4, Systematizing anti-discrimination law; Section 5, Self-determination and minority rights.

Part III, The Mechanisms of Protection, includes 4 chapters. Chapter 8, Ensuring compliance with international human rights law: the role of national authorities, has 2 sections. Section 1, Judicial remedies; Section 2, Non-judicial mechanisms. Chapter 9, The United Nations human rights treaties system, has 4 sections. Section 1, State reporting; Section 2, Individual communications; Section 3, The implementation of findings of UN human rights treaty bodies; Section 4, The reform of the UN human rights treaties system. Chapter 10, The United Nations Charter-based monitoring of human rights, includes 4 sections. Section1, The establishment of the Human Rights Council; Section 2, The complaints mechanism; Section 3, The universal periodic review; Section 4, The special procedures. Chapter 11, Regional mechanism of protection, includes 3 sections. Section 1, The European system of protection of human rights; Section 2, The Inter-American system of protection of human rights; Section 3, The African system of protection of human and peoples' rights.

The topics are discussed through the use of cases, materials and commentary. This includes cases from international courts, committees and treaty bodies as well as national courts. There are questions at the end of each chapter or discussion to challenge and guide the reader to think more in-depth of the issues. Like most law books, the text includes many lengthy references and notes for those who are keenly interested to do further research and studies. Book is very good starting point for ASIC backend engineers - with good and short introduction and than right on to the target.
However there is no substitute for practice so after reading the book , my advice is to jump start to some simple to medium complex projects.

This is a good intro - like the title says these are the essentials. This is a great overview of methodology, but the real secrets to success in physical design are knowing how to write and debug scripts, especially perl, unix, c-shell.

I am deeply disappointed with the very bad graphic quality of this edition. It is a xerox edition; it is so poor that you cannot satisfactorily visualize the pictures. I really think that the authors do not know what the publishers did with that important oeuvre. It is a shame, no matter the price went down and down. Take care with this edition. It reflects the decadence of environmental psychology ?

About the Author
W. G. Rees is a senior lecturer at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, where he has taught and researched in the field of remote sensing for over twenty years. He has been active in developing and applying remote sensing methods to the mapping and monitoring of the polar regions, having conducted fieldwork in arctic regions of Europe and Asia and in Svalbard. For the past few years he has been joint coordinator of PPS Arctic, a major programme to investigate the characteristics and behaviour of the arctic treeline as part of the International Polar Year, and he is also a member of the ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) working group on LiDAR. Dr Rees has published several books on remote sensing, including the first and second editions of Physical Principles of Remote Sensing (1990, 2001, Cambridge University Press), The Remote Sensing Data Book (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and Remote Sensing of Glaciers (with P. Pellikka, Taylor and Francis, 2010). He was made a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 1996 and is a member of the Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Society.

**5 stars. I read this book two times before writing a review because I wanted to give my viewpoint without the emotional high of a first read. Lilliet Garrison book is an easy read, but one would benefit more by asking questions and studying her book along with the Bible. She supports her statements with biblical scriptures that are easily found online by swapping from the ebook to an online Bible. Her book deals with the sins that keeps us from enjoying the life God gave us and growing in to Christian Maturity. Her words were very encouraging; I never felt condemned. To me, the author appears to say that there are two groups of sins. The first type of sins stops us from getting in the game, and the other group of sins stops us from winning the race.... ... After the second read, I felt more encouraged to take action toward a lifelong race of Christian Maturity with a stronger sense of urgency. The author offers steps to take to avoid the pitfalls of sin that we all encounter. This time, I will write down the wisdom that I gained from L. Garrison insights and use it daily. I thank God for her wisdom and generosity. This ebook was free to me on Amazon. Since my first read almost a month ago, I have purchased all eight of her ebooks. I have recommended "GETTING UNSTUCK, Moving Beyond..." to several of my friends. Lilliet Garrison's book has been a blessing to my soul. -Kayla J.

what God says might be better. I was looking for something with more substance ...

Contrary to what the title may suggest, this is not a book of practical application. It is instead a dictionary of sin with some Bible verses thrown in to tell you that God says these things are not appropriate. And sometimes, what God says might be better. I was looking for something with more substance out of a title like this, so I was disappointed. Not that it's bad; just that it's not what it appears to be.

She's done it again.

Another great book by Lilliet Garrison. This book showed me how things can make you drift away from God. For me it was TV. We bought a digital converter for our old tv so we could watch the news. Instead we ended up getting hooked on other shows. That's when I felt a message from God that I was drifting away from him. So between reading Lilliet's book and God I decided to return the converter. Both my husband and I felt a huge weight lifted when we did that. It brought us back to reading God's word again.
I also realized I was becoming a bit of a hoarder, thinking "I might need this some day". There's stuff in my closet I haven't seen for over a year. So if I haven't needed it for that long then it's time to get rid of it. I would rather spend my time with the Lord. This is why I really like Lilliet Garrison's books. They make you think, see and understand. I believe she is truly inspired by God to help us see his path and what he wants us to do and be.
This is a great book for your library as you will no doubt read it more than once when you need "Getting Unstuck".

Update: I re-read this book and I think this is one of my favorite books of Lilliet's. It covers so many of the things I've had questions about. Also, I realized some things about myself. I have two problems I've always blamed them on my being a Taurus but that was just an excuse not to face them. I have committed the sin of wanting possessions over what the Lord wanted, which my devotion and obedience. The other is my anger. If someone vocally attacks me for anything I feel the need to attack back, even if they are right. This book has shown me that I need to work on these things and ask God's forgiveness and help in solving these problems. Only he can do that. If you have problems that are holding you back from being close to your Father God you will want to read this book.

easy to read and understand

This has challenged me to ask God where I need to grow and change. I knew most of what you wrote,and have heard it before. Because of church issues we are facing I realize I need to ask the Holy Spirit to help me discern things to stay in the will of God and ask forgiveness where I have come short and failed. I love how you have scriptures within the context ,similar to a sermon. I feel God led me to your book and have been encouraged...thank you!
