I would expect most of the audience for a book like this would not be Mathematicians ... the book is very good and elegant but difficult to follow for an Engineer. I'd recommend the book by Rausand as more suitable for first learning about Reliability before embarking on this textSystem Reliability Theory: Models, Statistical Methods, and Applications, 2nd Edition (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)

Smart investors will allocate some time to this book

This is a great book on investing. Coming off reading Risk-Return Analysis: The Theory and Practice of Rational Investing (Volume One), a weighty, math-heavy volume written by a Nobel laureate (Harry Markowitz), I was pleased to find Asset Allocation provided a lot of the same take on portfolio balancing and limiting risk without overburdening the reader with formulas and minutiae. This book instead explores historical trends using hypothetical portfolios and critical analysis of the performance of various asset classes during up, down, and sideways markets. At the heart is a strategy of diversification, rebalancing, and risk avoidance which individual investors and investment advisers (more on them in a second) can put to work in their personal and client portfolios.

Like the Markowitz book, the crux of Gibson's investment strategy is that more risk can result in better returns, but less risk does not necessarily result in reduced returns. Ultimately, the determination of risk, the potential value it represents, and the investor's ability to endure the risk during different types of market trends will determine the success (or failure) of a given portfolio's asset mix. Once this groundwork is laid, Gibson then provides some perspective on analyzing a client's risk tendencies and preferences, ideal asset mixes, and overall performance aspects of various types of securities and investments, ultimately to help in constructing a portfolio the client will be happy with. If you are not a investment planner or CFA with paying customers, the last third of the book will likely not be of much value to you. Reading through it, however, might provide you with some insight into your own investment preferences. (As a long time investor, I didn't find it particularly useful.)

There is a lot of viable and actionable information here, and the detailed discussion of risk and portfolio construction in the first two-thirds of the book is (I think) quite original and much easier to implement than a lot of other strategies I've seen in investment books. For typical investors who are not advising others, the last third of the book has limited benefit, but even with that, the first part of the book makes it well worth a full five stars.

optimize your portfolio

Seems this book is targeted to financial planners. That might explain the high price tag. Originally listed at about $37 then jumped to nearly $50 before falling to $42 and slowly creeping up in price. Finally gets to the efficient frontier tools and then just barely mentions the tool used for the examples. No references that I could find as to how to acquire this tool. Not quite done reading it. I expected more focus on how to minimize the "black swan" events. No such luck. Had to go to "journal of financial planning" for current thinking on that topic. Basically, I think this book is priced too high for what you get.

Grade 5 Up-Six years ago, Miguel and Elena's mother and father left Mexico and crossed la línea into California. On the morning of Miguel's 15th birthday, he receives a note from his father telling him that it is time for him to join them. Miguel is sad to leave his grandmother and sister behind, but is excited about being reunited with his parents. Unbeknownst to Miguel, Elena, 13, disguises herself and joins him on the difficult journey. They are robbed, threatened, and almost perish in a desperate trek across the desert. The pacing of the plot is quick and driven, and the characters are realistically drawn. They interact as true siblings do, sometimes with love and sometimes not. Cultural and geographical background information is expertly woven into the novel. The author creates a mood of desperation and anxiety as the story unfolds and Miguel and Elena discover that crossing la línea will forever change the way they look at themselves and the world. A gripping contemporary survival adventure, this spare first novel is also a heart-wrenching family story of courage, betrayal, and love. The harsh facts of the border crossing are immediate--the horrors of dehydration, the soldiers' violence, corruption, and the migrants' terrifying, often disastrous attempts to hop the trains. Miguel's first-person narrative tells it without romanticism. The young people are brave, but they are angry at each other and at their parents, who left them seven years before. They do make it, but always there is the reality of those who do not. Jaramillo teaches migrant kids in California, and in her final notes, she says her story is fiction, but it is based on real events. Spanish is a natural part of the text; there is no glossary, and no need for one. This was good exam prep. The questions hit on all the quirky little rules in Will/Trusts law. It is a little heavy on Property law (remainders subject to divestment, blah, blah), which my final exam didn't focus on (thank god).

His 2nd Edition is even more helpful

This is the First Edition - his Second Edition has even more helpful information. Thankfully, it is written to be understood, in the straight-forward manner appreciated by folks who are seriously looking for a healthier way of life and/or how to prevent and survive cancer WITHOUT caustic chemicals, radiation and surgery. Oncologists tell their patients they can eat whatever they want to because they have no way of guaranteeing their conventional methods will "cure" cancer so what difference would it make what they ate? Actually, it makes a HUGE difference but you'd never know it from your doctor. The information in Killing Cancer - Not People is the result of many years of research and dedication to learning how to keep our bodies healthy in order to best prevent disease, and how to help our body heal itself as God intended - naturally. NOT "being a doctor" is actually an advantage when it comes to interviewing ordinary people who underwent conventional "cures" only to find their condition worsened, people who made the decision soon enough to seek an alternative treatment to drugs, real doctors and clinics who offer natural, non-chemical treatments, and then be able to compile his findings in book form to be shared with his fellow man. You cannot make an informed decision about your health unless you've "done your homework". This book should be #1 in your library if you're serious about healthy living. Factual and Detailed

Mr. Wright's book is quite detailed on this subject, and while it does not carry the bibliography you'd likely find from someone with a scientific or medical background, (Wright is not a doctor), the book almost always references his source, some of which comes from data derived from the net. Published internet data is no less true than printed data, but if you have a prejudice about this, don't buy it. In my view, Wright's book and message is very important for anyone seeking to prevent or heal cancer without chemo, surgery or radiation. His tone is a little caustic to the average American who doesn't take care of themselves, very caustic to the FDA and doctors who don't seem to "get it" that Nature truly heals, and drugs do not... so if you can't tolerate that tone, don't get it. But if you want to know the truth about what works to heal cancer and could potentially save your life, well, many folks in the know (like Bill Henderson for one), say it's the best book they've ever read on how to do it. Before I opened the first page, I was afraid of this disease. Now I think of cancer as no more threatening to my life and health than any other degenerative disease, and I've already implemented the prevention strategies into my every day lifestyle. If all Americans absorbed the same information and lived accordingly, we'd see our cancer stats plummet. I like the e-book option because you can type a search term into the document which is very handy, plus it costs less than used softcovers, from over at AmericanACI.org. I give it four out of five, because five for me, is perfection. (And the only book that deserves that, is the Good Book, at least in my book.)

Amazing, but...

The book is truly amazing.. However, please DO NOT read this book as a first one as you start your quest for alternative cancer fights or battle for your own or one of your loved one's life. Simply because Bob is so sure in what he preaches he isn't focused into explaining things in details to a reader, I mean he just doesn't want to spend much energy on persuading the reader into his beliefs.
For me it was totally OK because I have researched (and still am) the topic in numerous places, so for me Bob's book came as a beautiful, simple, easy to read reminder, check-list, call it what you like... But if it were the first thing to come into my hands, I guess I could have some doubts on some of teh topics. I would recommend reading Susanne Sommers' Knockout first and than going back to Killing cancer!
To leave no doubt, I definitely recommend Bob's book in everybody's library!
