Superb novel, ahead of its time

A wonderful novel about a subject taboo in the 1950's in London... growing old. One of the very few books of its time to talk about those in their 70's and 80's without being patronizing or treating them as stereotypes. BBC Television produced a wonderful version filled with stars who had not held starring roles in decades (except Maggie Smith). Wonderful character studies and a clever premise. Vintage Muriel Spark, for me her finest novel.

Attracting the attention of Irish airport security, he is eventually sectioned and escorted to a psychiatric unit.For what wrongdoing, he questions? For the harm done unto whom? As he sees it, he is merely embarking on a pilgrimage as directed to by his spiritual guides. While the medical director is caught up in a web of politics, counter-terrorism and Home Office demands, his colleague, Patricia, a fellow psychiatrist, concedes that while his beliefs are at odds with her own, Olaf is not a risk. Discharging the enigmatic Olaf, however, their path continues to overlap.What unfolds is a fascinating and intriguing exploration of alternative beliefs, and an encounter in which the pair have a lot to learn from each other. Whilst Patricia uncovers Olaf's story, marked by great loss and a childhood during which nature was his only solace, she finds herself caught up in his present journey, guiding his path on his mission, and surprisingly forced to question her own hard-held, rationalistic beliefs. Amid a messy divorce, a troubled teenage son and an estranged daughter, for Patricia this case couldn't have arrived at a worse time, and yet, in the end, couldn't have arrived at a better time; in opening her mind to the childhood lessons of her Irish grandmother, and the possibility of something else, she finds great healing in the lessons of Olaf.Fast paced and riddled with twists, this tale is infused with the ancient folklore of Britain, Ireland and Iceland. Legends, ley lines, maps and the mystical culminate in a read that is both thrilling and thought provoking. A foray into the realm of the metaphysical and geometrical might sound off-putting, but with Patricia and her son, Colm, as new to this as we might be, we are expertly guided along throughout, by none other than the knowledgeable Olaf. Preaching acceptance, tolerance and personal growth, Olaf's presence brings changes for all of those open to considering his perspective on life. With a bit of a twist from Patricia at the end, though, one is left wondering whether a sequel will follow.Raising much bigger questions, such as the influence of science and culture in regards to mental illness, this book does not shy away from some of its grander themes. Indeed, amid the twisting plot, one is asked to consider the beliefs that are shared, to weigh up and to judge whether Olaf is in fact, 'magician, mystic or out of his mind?' I read the book in preparation for my Esoteric Quest in Iceland where I was to meet one of the book’s author, Haraldur Erlendsson. The book combines ancient wisdom, myths, holistic healing and gives practical guidance that can be used right away. Great book to lend to your friends and colleagues who like mystery novels as well as those who like to embark on a journey of discovery and healing. I wish for the book to get into the hands of health and mental health practitioners to open the doors for a compassionate dialogue with the people in their care.

Relevance of the spiritual dimension in modern society

The principal character in ‘The Man Who Drew Triangles’ is a young Icelander named Olaf. His interactions - official, social and medical - with a variety of people he meets on a mysterious quest raise a variety of interesting questions regarding the relevance of the spiritual dimension in modern society. They also bring into focus the relationship between religion and science, and explore how modern man can deal with experiences of a transcendental nature. It is for each reader to decide whether Olaf is insane, or does the insanity lie with our modern, materialistic culture?
For an open-minded reader, this book offers a mirror whereby he or she can see themselves in the context of ancient mythologies and transcendental realities which defy the onslaught of modernisation.

A Wonderful Sci-Fi Fairytale Retelling of Pinocchio!!!

I don't even know where to begin. I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK. SO. MUCH!!!
This has to be one of the best books I've read this year, and one of my all time favorites! The Sci-Fi, Fairytale retelling of Pinocchio was fabulous! From Pia, the female version of Pinocchio, to Fig, the sci-fi version of Jiminy Cricket, to her loving, kind, father and her Strings. Pia was such an amazing character and she grew and learned so much along the way. The message this story gave was sooo wonderful and spoke volumes!!! There's so much I want to say, but won't ruin this story for others. Read it for yourself, and I promise you won't regret it!!!

David Estes is a phenomenal writer. I am always so impressed by how much love he has for his characters, he must for them to come across on the page as well as they do. I loved Pia and I cried with her, laughed with her, felt angry with her, and felt her love for others. Only an author who truly feels for his characters can portray them in such away as to touch us so strongly.

I bought the audible of Strings and look forward to listening to it as I've heard what a great job narrator Kate Rudd does.

I look forward to any future work that David has in store for us!!

Captivating and impeccably well-written, ‘Strings’ follows the story of Pia, a 16-year old girl with strings attached to her body in 15 places, as she works with her father, Gio, in his isolated workshop inside a massive and mysterious facility, designing and building miniature technology. This is the only life Pia has ever known. She does not remember a time before she and her father had these strings; these strings that can control their every movement.

When the facility unexpectedly removes special memory-blocking chemicals from her nightly dose of drugs (via the strings) Pia starts to remember her past; her mother and childhood friends. As management introduces other changes, Pia’s whole world changes and she becomes unsure of who to trust.

There is never a dull moment, between rich world-building, descriptions of every-day living with strings, and a clever heroine who questions everything. With ‘Strings,’ Estes has flawlessly executed a brilliant futuristic sci-fi re-telling of ‘Pinocchio.’

This is my first David Estes book and i really enjoyed his take on the retelling of Pinocchio. The whole concept of strings being a way to save someone and that the characters of this famous story are really part of this whole company and are being controlled by 3 owners and how each of the different characters worked together to create this elaborate story that your just drawn in to and are lost in for a few hours. The author really knows how to draw you in and see things from a different angle then you always known. Very well done.

About the Author
Michael E. McCormick is currently a Corbin A. McNeill Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the US Naval Academy. He is a Fellow of the Marine Technology Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1976, he became the co-editor of the journal Ocean Engineering and remained so for thirty years. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Marine Technology Society Journal. Professor McCormick was the first recipient of the US Naval Academy Alumni Award for Research Excellence and was also awarded the US Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the US Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. He is the author of Ocean Engineering Wave Mechanics and Ocean Wave Energy Conversion. Professor McCormick received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in civil engineering and a Sc.D. in engineering science from Trinity College, Dublin.

Reasonable, but old

This is a reasonable read with a lot of good information. There are many equations available to help the engineer understand the physics of what is happening. Non-engineers may want to find a different book, or skip over any sections with equations. Unfortunately, there are numerous errors in the equations. One great thing is that there are a lot or "worked examples" in this book so it is possible to test your understanding of the equations (and prove that the book has errors).

Perhaps the bigger problem with the book is that it is so old (1981). Wave power has progress a lot since then. The book is well written and carefully considered. It is unfortunate that no one has had a chance to update the book. On the other hand, the physics of wave power does not change, so that section of the book is fine.

If the author writes a Wave Power 2010, I would definitely pick that up.

Excellent technical reference with basic technology review.

I borrowed this from the local varsity library and appreciated it's excellent readable style, dual unit use and relevant examples so much as to make this a must buy and I have done just that. Sensible comparison of various wave energy conversion technologies show how to assess WEC methods. As a prelude to McCormick's later, more advanced books, this is certainly one that should involve the reader in this fascinating technology.

I bought this book for a class (required text), but I think I only opened the book a few times. It seemed a little dated. I traded it back to amazon after the class was over. I just wasn't very impressed and I didn't find it useful. My class was Ocean Energy Conversion and wave energy conversion was about half the class.

This is a very good pair of topics

This is a very good pair of topics, very interesting and very important guide to beginners. This book talks about the basic structure of cryptography and malware. It teach us about codes and system security what helps us to be safe of hackers. This issues are essential for those who work with computer programming. I had a good time reading this book and there were not too many confusing words. I'll put in practice my new knowledge.

Nice book to learn to avoid malware and virus

I got it from my dad, but I read it too, and I also have other books from this collection and they are good in my opinion, he used to always get malware and virus on his pc, I think it will be good for him to read this and learn to identify malware, and virus and avoid them. Also as computing engineering student I wanted to know how malware and virus works, and this helped me a bit on that.

I bought this book for a friend who was taking conversation classes and he enjoyed the book very much. Told me that the front cover page bended in the first days, but I guess this is expected from the type of material of these books. Overall, the content and structure of the book seemed to help him very much to improve his conversation skills.

Gamon Sakurai is a Japanese comic book artist from Tokyo. Born in 1986, Sakurai was selected for the Afternoon Magazine Four Seasons Award for New Comic Artists.
