Ms Smith has a unique way of getting the message across, with both laughter and tears. She leads you through the books of the Bible in a very interesting way by looking at one theme, two events, three people, four types of writing found in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). As she talks about Christian Scriptures (New Testament), you gain an understanding of who the author of each book might be, the community the author is writing to and the situations they are experiencing. The last chapters present an introduction to Near East religions (Judaism and Islam) and Far East religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucism, Shintoism, Taoism) and how each looks at God. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking God or knowledge about God, it is a wonderful read!

Virginia Smith has a way of grabbing my attention, even with the dry parts of Scripture, and making me read everything! Her sense of humor is so present, and her love of Scripture is infective!

About the Author

Jorge de Brito is a Full Professor at the Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources Department of Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. He was also the Head of the ICIST Research Unit in two consecutive terms between 2009 and 2012. One of his main research fields is the use of recycled aggregates in mortar and concrete production, within the Sustainable Construction general framework. He has co-authored several book chapters, around 40 ISI papers and many other publications on this specific field. His supervision experience comprises several Post-Doc scholarships, around 25 PhD’s and more than a 100 Masters. He has participated in 15 research programs (4 international), two of which as Principal investigator concerning the use of recycled aggregates in concrete. He is a member of the following international scientific commissions: W80 (CIB) / 100-TSL (RILEM); W86 (CIB); W115 (CIB). He is a frequent contributor to international journals both as an author (with 100 plus published papers) and as a reviewer (in 50 different journals).

Dr. Nabajyoti Saikia is working at Kaziranga University, Jorhat, (India). He obtained a Ph. D. degree in chemistry (material science) from Dibrugarh University (India) in 2003. His research interest includes the solid waste management, chemistry of cement and allied materials, environmental chemistry and concrete science. He has published more than 50 numbers of research articles in various refereed journals, conference proceedings and in book as a book-chapter.

Complex and involving

The Wind Chill Factor isn't necessarily an easy book to read. The plot is complex and if you don't keep up with the different twists, it would be easy to get lost in the details. However, this is absolutely one of the most richly written books I've ever read. The sensations the lead character experience become the reader's sensations; his thoughts, your thoughts. Once you commit your energy to the story, you'll be hard pressed to put the book down until you are finished.

Dont Cry for me Minnesota

1972: Drat! We have Nixon AND resurgent Nazi sleeper cells here and around the globe? John Cooper is recently divorced and eking out an AA-assisted writer's existence in Cambridge, MA when he receives a cryptic telegram from his elder brother, who is inexplicably in Buenos Aires:
"URGENT YOU MEET ME COOPER'S FALLS 20 JANUARY. DROP EVERYTHING. FAMILY TREE NEEDS ATTENTION. CHEERS OLD BOY. CYRIL."
So home to the family namesake Cooper's Falls, Mn goes John Cooper. This Ludlum-esque page-turner had me as soon as John Cooper's Lincoln swung northward in Chicago and headed on the long ago familiar Illinois Tollroad trip towards home in Minnesota - with a stop at "one of the Fred Harvey emporiums." Almost run off the road near Madison in a blizzard, John goes home to revisit old family secrets. Then round and round the globe he goes, where it stops only author Thomas Gifford knows. I was up all night following the intrigue!

Electrifying story of a complex family

I am amazed and shocked at the vitriol and venom expressed against Gifford in some of these reviews! It's a sign that Gifford is a challenging writer.

It also surprised me, in 1972, that this book was never made into a movie. "Soon to be a major motion picture" said the cover. It never happened.

To the naysaying and nitpicking reviewers, I say, "Grow up." Gifford has captured something ugly and important here in this book. I used to audit county courts and county governments. Later I worked for a chief financial officer who lied under oath to a congressional committee and was fired by the organization's board. I've seen a lot of ruthless, petty, dishonest people.

And this book is a masterpiece in collecting such personalities. It ranks with Robert Towne's immortal screenplay for "Chinatown." And it is almost a screenplay itself. The main character is a literate but down-on-his-luck divorced movie buff, John Cooper, who makes innumerable references to classic motion pictures. He becomes a friend of the local police chief, a boy wonder who got away from the big city force by marrying a rich woman, like Dashell Hammit's Nick Charles.

The tale boomerangs through three continents. These things happen. There are villians like this out there.

If you like this book, you will also like the sequel, "The First Sacrifice" and a triumphant nail-biter about counterfeiting, "The Man from Lisbon," which I think is Gifford's best book ever.

Romm has made a judicious selection of the most important passages from the Histories and he has joined them with concise summaries of the intervening events so as to make the book a unified, coherent whole. The translation (provided mainly by Shirley, although many key passages have been translated by Romm) is lively and readable, and Romm's notes provide just the sort of information that a first-time reader of Herodotus would need. Romm's 'Introduction' is perhaps the most valuable aspect of the book. By highlighting the main themes and explaining Herodotus' use of imaginative material, Romm helps the reader make sense of a text that is sometimes unwieldy. Romm also situates Herodotus' work within its historical context, providing sensible answers to important questions such as the publication date of the Histories and Herodotus' views on events in the Peloponnesian War. The volume also includes a chronology of the Archaic Age, maps, and a glossary of important characters and places. In short, Romm and Shirley have produced a valuable desideratum: an excellent, one-volume introduction to Herodotus' Histories. Great text for intro-level course

I bought this text to find selections for an intro-level course in classics that I am teaching. The translator includes selections that my students will be most interested in reading and renders the Greek in lively English prose. I will assign selections from this text to augment my history outine, and I think students will find this an enjoyable (one hopes), or at least quite usable text.

Neural Networks 151. Don't let the math scare you

I picked up this book as a slightly more advanced and technical introduction to neural networks than the pure applied programming or highly conceptual books out there. Hence the title "Neural Networks 151" instead of "Neural Networks 101". I was looking for something that provided a detailed, behind-the-scenes look at the theory and structure of neural networks without requiring a PhD in math. This book delivered. While there is a great deal of math, it's actually quite straightforward if you look closely. For the most part, the math is simply a representation of what's contained in the text. Reading the text allowed me to grasp the mathematical equivalent quickly and easily. This is distinct from books which put out 20 equations and only have a few lines of text, leaving you to painfully and slowly work through each equation to figure out what's going on (reaching for other textbooks and lots of coffee along the way). Does it help to have a great deal of mathematical knowledge ? Sure. Is it absolutely necessary ? Not in my opinion. E.g., "delta x" simply means "change in x". If that sounds familiar or straightforward, the book shouldn't be too difficult. I skimmed sections that weren't totally applicable to the problems I was looking at, but it was good to see the knowledge was there in case I needed to return to it later. It seems geared towards an instructional setting, but not at a 301 level. As an intermediate book that solidified my understanding and knowledge of neural networks, it was perfect.

The missing star is due to the book's price

I bought this book as a reference book during a graduate course I took in Neural Computation.
The book was clear and useful in presenting the topics, and more importantly, in presenting the algorithms in a clearn simple format which made it very easy to produce a computer program implementing these algorithms just by reading the book.
It was also useful by listing various things which have been done in literature to alter the algorithms for various purposes.
I suppose that people in the field of Neural Computation might find this book useful as an introduction book and also as a reference book (at least for its clear explenations and algorithms listings), but otherwise need more comprehensive books which cover a lot more math than this books does.
Actually, this is a good book for getting to know this dicipline for people who don't like to mess too much with calculus. Other books in this fiels contain more, a lot more, calculus in them, so I would also argue that this book is useful for people who want to understand the ideas, have a clear algorithm so its easy to implement, and at the same time, not worry about the math too much.
You don't see proofs here, at least not as much as I expected to, but I suppose that this follows the idea that this book is useful as a complementary book, rather than the authoritative book in the subject.
I only regret the high price of the book.
