Heartily recommended - entertaining and informative

I bought this based on one of the writers, who I have read previously. I was dramatically unprepared for how entertaining a read this would be and some of the researched insights regarding life as a woman in the various time periods discussed were eye-openers for me (not unexpectedly).

My wife grabbed the book and read it over the course of a day or two. She complained she wasn't getting anything done because she wouldn't put it down.

Definitely worth reading and I hope Karen and Lori continue their collaboration with more books to come.

womanhood in the Middle Ages: A specialized take

Nothing will make a woman appreciate modern conveniences more than reading about what women in medieval times had to endure with relation to their womanly parts. In The Medieval Vagina, Harris and Caskey-Sigety provide a humorous glimpse of the way things were in the middle ages. Just about every feminine topic that can be conjured up is discussed—from birth control (or the lack of) to panties (or the lack of) and everything in between. What makes this book worth reading is not simply the thorough historical research shared on the topic (which will definitely come in handy if Jeopardy ever decides to make this a daily double question) but also the method in which the material is delivered. Humor not only makes the information funny to read; it also helps put the information in context of how we think about women’s issues in today’s time. The wit displayed makes this content relevant to the reader. While this is most certainly a very specialized book dealing with one issue at a very specific point in time, women will appreciate knowing the history of those who came before them and how they (and their vaginas) were perceived in society, art, religion, and medicine.

fast-paced and fun

The Medieval Vagina is fast-paced and a fun read. I was amazed how much territory was covered in the book from what one might expect to the bizarre and unexpected.The authors address such things as how menstruation was viewed, how a woman's virginity was verified, and chastity belts (no real surprises here), but also devices such as the pear of anguish, venereal disease, and lesbianism. They also make connections to modern times as well when appropriate such as how rape was viewed then as opposed to now and appropriate, or not appropriate, euphemisms for the vagina. It's not for the faint of heart. They don't pull any punches, but answer many of the questions you were afraid to ask, yet find so fascinating.

Overall, a good text, good end of chapter exercises, and usually good case studies.

Are the end-of-chapter cases and exercises useful? Are there any exercises that you would not use in your class? I would consider using all the end of chapter cases and exercises. They were all interesting and would help students understand the concepts better.

Nice package, no Substance

This book looks really attractive. The layout is interesting, and makes it easy to find things. That is about the extent of the positives of this book, however.

This book features just about every annoying aspect of todays textbooks:

-The shotgun approach to teaching: instead of actually laying down any principles, the book uses the touchy feely "multiple persepectives" approach which results in a confused student wondering what he or she was supposed to have learned.

-Useless ethics. The book supposedly teaches ethics, but to avoid making anyone mad, it just tiptoes around issues with vague "thinking" questions.

-Poor word definitions. This book defines words in strange runaround ways, which don't make any sense. I've also seen some a lot of words defined as a different type (i.e. an adjective defined as a noun).

-Overly Complex diagrams. Studies of the brain show that we can only remember an average of 7 details about an item. Yet the book is full of diagrams with 11, 15, or 20-something items. It's simply not possible to be able to recall that many elements of a diagram without extensive study.

-Hey look, there's this thing called the internet. We should use it for something useful, but instead lets just annoy the student!

This book is full of annoying little references to internet content. When I'm reading, I just don't want to stop, open a webpage, and look at a silly little quiz. Additionally, students who buy a used book don't get a license for the internet content.

-Requiring professors to use pre-designed "test banks". In my class, our professor is required by the manufacturer to use only the test bank provided by the manufacturer. The questions are horrible! They don't address thing the professor chooses to speak on that our outside the textbook, and are very vague and confusing.

I realize the writers of this book put a lot of effort into it, and it really is an attractive product. To be usable, however,

200 Killer licks by Greg Koch

A treasure trove of fine licks by master guitarist Greg Koch. These licks are challenging and not for the beginning guitarist even though it looks like a companion to the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. He plays 44 licks and makes variations of those in Rock, Blues, Jazz, Country, and Outside to come up with 200 licks. The book only lists for $9.95 and includes a CD and will give a lot to work on for a while. A great value compared to the cost of private lessons. The licks sound great and the CD sounds great also. A winner from Mr. Koch.

Disappointed

Mr. Koch is a fine guitarist with a unique raunchy flavor[this is a compliment]but the book and cd are a disappointment.His selections I feel don't represent his best abilities and many are far too similar pehaps in his quest to reach "200" licks as stated in the title.I have many titles in this genre--the best is by a major talent by the name Guthrie Govan"Creative Guitar"Book 1 and Book 2 Subtitle-Cutting-Edge Techniques.

OK, but not great

First, the things that I don't like:

1) The CD is set up so that there is one track for all 5 styles of each lick. If you want to hear the last couple styles of a particular lick, you have to fast forward until the one you want to hear is played. It would have been much better to have a different track for each style of each lick.

2) The "country" style licks have an absolutely horrible tone. HORRIBLE. I've never heard a tone like it on any country song. It sounds much more like what a rocker "thinks" country sounds like than what country players actually play. Its really nothing more than an annoyance for me, but it bugs me to hear it still.

As for the what I like about this book? There are a some good licks in the book, particularly in the blues and rock styles. For what it costs, it is worth the price, but I own other licks books with a higher proportion of good licks in them.

A Treat for Armchair Cycle Tourists or Anyone Planning to Tour

This is an absolute treat for armchair cycle tourists or anyone actually planning to tour themselves. Scott's writing pulls you into the experience that he, Jodi, and Django have pedaling (and pawing) from Jasper, Alberta, Canada to the Mexican border where Americans battled Poncho Villa at Columbus, New Mexico. Along the way you feel the thrills and the exhaustion of the extreme tourer. Part tour guide, part "how to", part local history, all the stories are presented vividly.

Some may find Scott's writing style too florid. For them, read Hemingway instead. But for those who like to immerse themselves in a place or time and marinate in the moment, they will be thankful that Scott is so observant and detailed. His goal is to go to a place, at a pace that ensures that little is missed, absorb it in the knowledge that he is likely to have no opportunity to repeat the journey, and record it in a way that makes it accessible to him to recall completely -- for its pleasure or discomfort. This style ensures that once you have visited that locale with him you know whether you ever want to be in that place.

A lesson of mammoth proportions

A new 'triker' myself, I found the tales of the road to be humbling yet remarkably inspirational; honestly didn't know I needed your witty, clever view, formulated just inches from the earth, mile after amazing mile. I have never had the joy (yet) of sharing the tri-cumbent struggle with another being and I started to suffer from the belief that my legs would never acclimate to the uphill burn. This educational story has re-ignited that fire of determination, that insane push to keep spinning, and look forward to the next challenge. Gone is the loathing of my choice to peddle everywhere. Thank you Scott, for the interspersed historical lessons, humor, and even the frustrations. This is one I will read again, but next time with a map in hand so I can better follow your journey. :)

While I enjoyed Scott, his wife

While I enjoyed Scott, his wife, and their dog's adventures down the Rocky Mountains (and I ride a trike by the way), I thought it was just a miserable trip. Nothing sounded good. If it were me, I would have made the trip sound a bit better. It is a quick read and I think he should have edited it a bit more. I enjoyed his other book where he rode across America. This trip was one that I would never want to take. Thank you for letting me know how miserable I would be.

Great resource

I consider myself a very good diabetic in terms of vigilance and glucose control...and this book was a fantastic refresher course while teaching me new things, as well. It actually solved two or three mysteries for me that would have made things easier in the past had I known them. I will likely reread this once a year...it did a great job motivating me to work for tight control.

More of a "quick start" guide...

Lots of positive chatter about this book, so I ordered it. My DH is 52, lifelong Type 1, super-active so we're always looking for useful tidbits.

Unfortunately this book's content is pretty elementary. It would be an improvement over the pamphlet you got when you were first diagnosed, but it would certainly be useful only in the first 6 mos - 1 year or so, and then only if your lifestyle is pretty plain vanilla. If you work unusual hours or rotate shifts, if you travel constantly or have a job with loads of stress, if you're extremely athletic, if you have other health issues that seriously affect control, if you're determined to go for tight control, this is not the book for you.

Scheiner skips the hands-on details of how to do a lot of things (like down-and-dirty details of adjusting basals and boluses for pump users in complex scenarios). He gives the Readers Digest version but not the super-detailed version. As you'll see throughout the book, Scheiner would like you to consult with his diabetes practice to deal with these trickier situations. Just my personal opinion, but I don't think plugs for your business belong in the actual content of a book like this. If you want to plug your diabetes consulting practice, stick it on a separate page at the front or back of the book.

*MY* advice for complicated scenarios is that you need a DIFFERENT book, Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need to Succeed on an Insulin Pump. This is an invaluable and unique toolbox for anyone with Type 1. I think we have bought the last three editions and in each edition Walsh and Roberts have added new tidbits and suggestions (and I am not usually someone who shells out for multiple editions of the same book).

As I said in a comment, Pumping Insulin is truly like the doc/CDE you WISH you had but can never find. My hubby is an ultramarathoner, triathlete, century cyclist and the PI book has been extremely helpful in troubleshooting lows after all-day training/events, figuring out how best to adjust boluses and basals and food for different activities (swimming and running - very different!) and so forth.

(Sheri Colberg's Diabetic Athlete's Handbook, 2d ed, is also very useful for Type 1 people who are seriously physically active, but if I could only have one book, I'd take PI over Diabetic Athlete. And I wouldn't bother with Think Like A Pancreas at all.]

The only downside of PI is that it is for smart people who aren't scared of numbers. It's not for Everydiabetic. It's for folks who want tight control and have the brains and analytical affinity to dive in. It's the ultimate self-management book.

If that's not you, that's cool - but Think Like A Pancreas isn't going to do the trick for you either, unless you're one of those "plain vanilla" folks I mentioned above.

Essential reading for anyone dealing with diabetes, experienced or not

Gary Scheiner's first edition of this book was excellent, it's hard to believe that he could improve on it so much.

Full disclosure: I've used Gary's services at Integrated Diabetes Services and benefited greatly from his help. My diabetes technology blog is mentioned in the book. I have had type 1 diabetes for 40 years, this book informed and motivated me.

Think Like a Pancreas starts with Gary's diabetes diagnosis story - this guy really gets diabetes because he's had Type 1 since 1985. He has used many different types of diabetes insulin pumps, blood glucose meters, and continuous glucose meters (CGM).

The second chapter (What's the Dang Diddly Point?) focuses on the reasons why blood glucose (BG) control is important. Instead of telling you just about 'complications', Gary explains that improved control will give you energy, reduce your appetite, keep you healthier, and give you the ability to lift cars with one hand. OK, I'm just kidding about the last one. But this chapter is motivating and empowering, you'll WANT to work at improving you BGs after reading this one.

As he says at the start of the chapter "Taking care of diabetes is really just an ongoing series of small sacrifices, costs, mental efforts, and time commitments." We're never going to achieve perfection, but we can constantly improve diabetes control.

The remaining chapters talk about: the different types of diabetes; the keys to controlling these, including even lancet choices; basal (background) and bolus(meals, BG corrections) insulins; the many factors that can affect your BG levels (and how even the best controlled are out of range 25% of the time); places to get support and help, including a huge number of excellent websites; and companies that provide various diabetes-related products.

The appendices are: logsheets; carb factors for various foods; glycemic indices for foods; and a useful table of carb amounts to cover exercise.

Phew, a lot of information. But Gary writes extremely well and this is book is easy to read, though you'll end up highlighting and marking many parts of it.

I strongly recommend this essential book for people with diabetes, parents of children with diabetes, and medical folks who are treating diabetic patients. Over the years I've purchased many copies (1st edition and this one) to give to folks who are struggling because of diabetes. It's just excellent.
