Loiane Groner

Loiane Groner lives in São Paulo, Brazil and has over 8 years of software development experience. While at university, she demonstrated great interest in IT. She worked as a teaching assistant for 2 and a half years specialising in teaching algorithms, data structures, and computing theory. She represented her university at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, Brazilian Finals (South America Regionals), and also worked as Student Delegate of SBC (Brazilian Computing Society) for 2 years. She won a merit award in her senior year for being one of the top three students with the best GPAs in the Computer Science department and also graduated with honors.

She has already worked at multinational companies, such as IBM. Her areas of expertise include Java SE, Java EE, and also Sencha technologies (Ext JS and Sencha Touch). Nowadays, she is working as Software Development Manager at a financial institution, where she manages overseas solutions. She also works as an independent Sencha consultant and coach.

She has also authored books such as ExtJS 4 First Look and Mastering JS for Packt Publishing.

Work through the Excersies befor you Publish!!!!!!!!!

Another book where a conscious effort has not been made to work through the exercises. Lack of explanations in the book including how to setup the environment. Why do I have to debug php errors that are part of the setup when the book is aoubt a completely different topic? The book is in English but some of the accompanying files are in Portuguese. Not only do I have to Google to find my errors, but also have to translate the config files. Don't even know what is waiting further down the road. Stick to one language please! Haven't gotten past the 2nd chapter and already frustrated. It's these types of resources that make you dump a possibly good technology before you even get started. If I get frustrated with a book I will only give one star because I can't give zero.

Loiane, next time you write a book I will be more than happy to collaborate. I really believe you know the subject well but are having trouble communicating it.

Examples too Simple, Explanations too short...a missed opportunity.

Sencha Architect (SA) App Development is a very short book (about 93 pages of actual content). I am new to Ext JS but have been doing software development for over 10 years. So, I think I am aware of my own limitations vs limitations in the content of this book.

It covers the basic interface, creating a simple Sencha Ext app, simple sencha touch app, some tips/tricks and then publshing and packaging and other resources. Overall this is not a beginners book. But you could pick it up and follow it. Groner is trying to provide some insight on using Architect vs regurgitating online help descriptions, which I can appreciate. But I didn't feel like I was getting insight from an experienced Sencha developer on how to use SA in an intelligent way beyond simple, single web pages.

Groner attempts to briefly explain MVC (just 1 page), but I find it a clumsy definition and still left me bewildered. I do know what MVC is, but her definition is poorly presented. She has to mention MVC though because SA is an MVC oriented development approach. But explanations are short.. for everything. Quite often, I found myself asking "why do you have to do that ?".

So, this book lacks insight from an experienced developer about developing meaningful applications. The 2 examples she provides are overly simple and lack depth. I can understand you don't want to confuse the reader with complex examples but without meaningful examples, and taking the time to actually explain things, you can't appreciate the capabilities of SA and the development approach you need to take. The book is afterall called "App Development", not "Overly simple examples for clicking buttons"

The examples are for beginners, but it requires that you know a Ext JS to an intermediate level. Groner could have included more sophisticated examples to walk through but I think she was trying to appeal to a wide audience. But in doing so, this book misses the mark in terms providing insight into using SA. You would gain almost as much from the online videos than using this book. The screenshots are not very well set out, and at first are confusing. Frankly, she could have used more page space to improve the flow. There is clear numbering of the order of steps in the screen shots for doing the tasks. Groner points out where things go to accomplish the objective and there is not much else beyond briefly explaining it to support the MVC principles.

I was left with more questions about SA after reading it. The back cover is a bit misleading as the topics are covered, but not to an extent that you can get through a meaningful application.

So, should you get this book ? NO. There is a wealth of online information from Sencha, forums and blogs that you can glean to accomplish the same thing.

Learning Architect? This book is for you!

As a lead engineer on the team that builds Sencha Architect I think it's safe to say I have a very strong opinion regarding material coving SA. Loiane Groner does a magnificent job covering all the bases in this book. It's an easy read cover to cover while also being a valuable reference to go back to. Everything you want from a technical book in my opinion.

The application builds are just the right size and complexity; not to simple and not overly complex. This will aid both beginners and advanced users. I loved that tips and tricks were prolific throughout the book and also had a section all its own. Even the most advanced users will learn something from this book, I'm certain.

The web has a wealth of knowledge about Sencha Architect but it's spread out across numerous sites and forum posts (Stack Overflow, Sencha forums, Architect docs, etc ...). Loaine brings it all together in a nice package called a book! It has an index, which is literally a super power in our world of disseminated information!

I received this guide yesterday, and first of all I was quite impressed the pages feel like quality paper and theres just so much information in this thing! However there a few errors one of which was a small typo which is not a big bother to me at all, and in the Bestiary there is a noticable spot of ink that blocks a few words. All in all though this is still a great guide to have!

This guide is huge! I love it! Awesome price too, 20$ cheaper than GameStop so I couldn't resist. Very excited to finally play this. Comes with a bookmark, e-guide download code and also a huge map poster!

Great book - old content somewhat

The book is awesome. Well made and the pages and ink are great. The reason for the missing star is that I had the original game and the original Prima Guide. This book is the exact same one with the DLC content added in. The text in the book even mentions content from updates and from DLC as optional even though it comes with the new special edition. I expected a re-printing of the original to some extent, I just feel like Prima dropped the ball on the editing this out to "hide" it from us. I have both my books side by side and the content is the same. I know that the game is also the same, I just wish they had removed the references to this fact.

Good short story

I have to disagree with the first reviewer. I read every day and anything with a bride or marriage of convenience has a strong attraction for me. This book was very good. The H and H were attracted to each other right at the beginning and there was a lot of passion between them although they were from opposite sides of so called society. I really enjoyed this book. There was no actual sex though it was hot, maybe that would be a deterrent for some. I would recommend this book, worth the read - and I do have over 2100 books still unread on my kindle.

Update. Well I see I am now the first reviewer so correction, I was actually disagreeing with the two star reviewer which was placed before mine. Anyways I would still read this book again despite my vast overload of books that caused my kindle to crash, reset and start over, lol.

I loved the time period. The H and h are perfect together, but they did not realize it at first. The marriage of convenience turned into a beautiful love affair. I can't wait to read another one of Dorsey's books.

Sweet romance

I really enjoyed this book, I liked Eleanor who was no way as mild and reserved as people thought, nor was she plain. John was awesome and I liked how he fell in love with Eleanor or Ellie almost without realizing it. At first she was just a way for him to gain acceptance into NY society, and he had enough money to purchase her from her father. This isn't as bad as it sounds because her father arranges for John to be introduced to his daughter and entrance to the society events, etc. Then it is up to John to get Ellie to marry him.

Eliie's mother is a snob and determined to marry her daughter to a penniless English baronet, Sir Alfred Farnsworth. You don't really get to know him, but I didn't like him. I also didn't like her mother, whose social position was more important to her then her daughter's happiness.

This was well written, a really sweet romance and definitely worth reading. I will be reading more books by Christine Dorsey based on this one.
