About the Author

Lee Frost was born in Yorkshire in 1966 and picked up a camera for the first time at the age of 15. A self-taught photographer, he is now regarded as one of Britain’s best known photographic authors. Lee also writes for various photographic magazines including Outdoor Photography and Black & White Photography; shoots stock images for picture libraries that sell throughout the world; and through his company Photo Adventures leads workshops where he passes on his knowledge and experience to small groups of photographic enthusiasts.

There is no better book helping you to understand the basics

Two friends (who are professional photographers) were telling me that there are too many books on photography on the market that turn a comparably simple task into something complicated. Shrouding the relations of aperture, shutter speed and film sensitivity made it difficult for me to improve my skills. But this book explained the basics of proper exposure so easily, giving good advice for even the most difficult light settings that I now have the courage to use more and more often manual settings instead of the program mode of my SLR.
This is by far the best book on photography for people that want to learn the basics and move on from point & shoot to a more creative way of taking pictures.

Incomparable! All you'll need to get head-start & keep going

If I had to pick one book for a beginner to learn the basics of photography, this would be the one. Whether film or digital, it presents the basics in logical easy-to-grasp order. The illustrations are not just works of art, but each make a point pertinent to the topic [like comparing depth of field with wide angle or tele lenses], stimulating the reader to give it a try. This author possesses that unique knack of presenting difficult material in an understandable, pleasantly conversational, manner - assisted by attractive sketches and relevant photo's. Not the least, the high quality paper makes reading easy, and the photo's glow. The occasional Briticism is good for a chuckle, and adds to the charm [yes, the author uses both metric and US measurements]. To repeat, whether you use film or digital cameras (or both), this book presents the basics, and presents them simply, attractively, completely, and very well indeed. It's a lot of book for a very modest price.
Although the fundamentals of photography remain unchanged, equipment changes over the years - and that's where the present (2003) printing shows it's 2000 origins. Digital cameras, in particular, have changed: an illustration of a "modern" 1.4 MP camera, and comments about memory 'as much as 256 kB', make the digital chapter seem undeservedly dated. Even so, the advice offered is as sound today as it was a few years ago. This superb introductory text deserves revision and updating -- keep it going Mr. Frost!

To the point and beautifully Illustrated

This the one book that taught me more about how to use my SLR than the camera's manual itself. The step by step approach and the logical arrangement of chapters makes it a book that really teaches you photography. I also liked the way Mr. Frost uses two photographs to illustrate a filter. One take without the filter and then the same one with a filter. Also explained very well is how longer lenses reduce depth of the photograph and small helful tips on increasing your depth of field. An encompassing book, the last few chapters tell about how a slide show can be made more interesting and how to take care of your equipment. The peppering of photos and illustrations make you want to go out and take pictures using the methods shown. A good buy and money well spent. My only gripe is that I preffered the smaller size of the previous edition as it fit easily in my kit bag.

Hi! These are the notes from my world history class. Oh, who am I? Well, some people said I was the smartest kid in class. I wrote everything you need to ace MATH, from the FRACTIONS to the COORDINATE PLANE, and only the really important stuff in between-you know, the stuff that’s usually on the test!

I tried to keep everything organized, so I almost always:
• Highlight vocabulary words in YELLOW
• Color in definitions in green highlighter
• Use BLUE PEN for important people, places, dates, and terms
• Doodle a pretty sweet pie chart and whatnot to visually show the big ideas

If you’re not loving your textbook and you’re not so great at taking notes in class, this notebook will help. It hits all the major points. (But if your teacher spends a whole class talking about something that’s not covered, go ahead and write that down for yourself.)

Now that I’ve aced math, this notebook is YOURS. I’m done with it, so this notebook’s purpose in life is to help YOU learn and remember just what you need to ace YOUR math class.

this is a fantastic math book

I'm an adult using this book. I also got it for a niece. Who doesn't have it yet, but I'm on CH 21. I skipped a couple topics cause I'm not capable of having patience with percents in word problems and I forget what else. Overall, this is a fantastic math book. I like the colorful and notebook feel.

Best math book ever, by far!

I purchased this book for our homeschooling curriculum. We love this book it's so easy to understand. I am using it with my 9 year old we are doing accelerated learning and I am able to explain each concept easily using this book. This is the only math book we are using and in it its truly all theirs is to know to make thru middle school math. I think is based on 6-8 grades. I wish I had this book back when I was in school, I love this book and so does my son. I think is good for everyone not just homeschooling. It's a good help to keep at home to review for homework or test in school. I also think math teachers should use it and explain math in the way it's explained here EASY to comprehend.

"Teaching for Results" is a must read for all educators!

Why aren't my students responding to my teaching? What can I do to help my students retain more information? Should I be mearuring my teaching efficiency by the way students learn? How come I always get all of the boring students?
Findley Edge's book, "Teaching for Results," will answer those questions and others. More importantly, it explains cognitive and learning development in a way that is easilty understood. Don't be fooled, however, into thinking it is simplistic. It certainly is not as Findley did his homework into learning and teaching methods. This is a book that every institution that trains teachers should require every student to read.
If there is only one flaw in the book it is in trying to track Findley's use of terms when he transitions from one idea to another. This is most important to a person trying to make a teaching outline from some of the chapters in the book. If that is not important to you then I would give the book a fifth star.
Churches should consider requiring all Sunday School teachers to read this book and to even write a short report about each chapter and how their teaching methods will be impacted by what they have read. Public speakers will be very interested in reading about how a listener automatically responds to the way certain questions or visual images are phrased. Parents would benefit tremendously in understanding the way children learn most effectively.
"Teaching for Results" isn't the only book on the market on the subject of teaching and learning but it certainly has to rank high on the list of those that can be used immediately and repeatedly. Get it today!

A Must Read For Sunday School Workers

If you are only going to read one book to help you improve your teaching, this should be the one. In this book, Edge encourages teachers to not only know what their goal is in teaching the lesson, but to aim for that goal. His premise is that teachers should not be satisfied with putting some information out there and hoping that the students learn something from it. The teacher should have an action in mind and aim to get the students to do that action. If the students are not learning and putting what they learn into action then the teacher is not teaching. This book is well worth reading.

malian blues is cool...

i bought this book after i listened to ali farka toure, tinariwen and some french speaker singers (amadou and mariam). This kind of music appears to be malian blues. although the book shows a lot of different styles coming from different places i find this book worth buying only for this section (4 pages). the reason for it is that it seems simply impossible to get information about this style anywhere else! futhermore the book not only give good examples but give you the theory that underlies the style (tuning and scales)...
for me its opening a lot, i started immediatly to write malian blues songs with my band... god bless the major pentatonic and dorian pentatonic scales!

Pretty much your only choice

Like many I was attracted to this book for its chapter on Malian blues, and it doesn't disappoint. It's also great for nearly any other African style of play- griot to malagasy- and the author, Banning Eyre, is a disciple of Ali Toure and Taj Mahal and all those other greats and has even recorded with some of them, so there's no question about his pedigree.

My only complaint is that there isn't enough! I really wish every chapter was its own book. The chapter on Malian blues is great and the explanation of each passage is scholarly, though short. It really is hard to find info on African styles of blues, so this opens up a world that was previously inaccessible to the West (though the music is prevelant and even popular in some circles, it's never been delved into in print). Definitely your best (and probably only) choice for this style of music. Get it.

This is a classic book which is highly recommended for those who are interested in pursuing the way of the storyteller, or are just interested in storytelling. However, you have to overlook that a couple of the example stories are uncomfortably racist and sexist, even by the standards of 1962, which was when the book was revised.

A different perspective

The handful of other reviews here are not very substantial. I'm not an oral storyteller; I'm a writer looking for help with pitching stories. So my perspective on this book differs from other reviewers.

First, the positives. Ms. Sawyer is a passionate and eloquent advocate of oral storytelling as an art form unto itself. She draws on a lifetime of experience and travel to argue that the art is worthy of an approach by practitioners that is reverent, rigorous, and passionate. She advocates that storytellers study subjects like music, voice, folklore and culture to deepen their art. There is also a fine selection of folk-tales that comprises the entire second half of the book.

All of this is very good--but in my opinion amounts to little more than a pep-talk for librarians who want to tell stories to children. As proof of this I would cite that when Ms. Saywer revised the book in the Sixties she only added two chapters, one on children's literature and another on adding poetry (for children) to the story hour. Telling stories to children is a fine ambition--it's just not one this reader shares.

However, there is plenty in the book that can be applied to other storytelling venues. But, as the author herself admits in the introduction, she has not written a practical manual on storytelling.

So if, like me, you are looking for practical tips on ways to improve your storytelling (and not just deepen your appreciation for what storytelling can be) then you can safely skip this book.

The literature will help you see the big picture. Life is all about the detail and it is that detail that one has to focus on when doing a story. The practice of story telling is one in where one must too have lots of experiences, such as? Going on trips and seeing the different cultures and lands of other countries for example along with socializing with people. This also includes reading a lot of books and magazines in order to get ideas. Just read it, and don't judge the book by its cover and i hope you get the material in order to make your storytelling in writing or in oral situations fruitful.
