Fascinating folk songs

I have to admit that I was skeptical when I looked at a preview copy of this book. I doubted that it could be both academically rigorous and genuinely entertaining. I'm glad to say I was proved wrong. It is definitely both. Written in clear and lucid prose, and using the author's (an English woman's) own experiences as a way into the fascinating Turkmen culture, this book is always extremely readable. As the first English-language book on Turkmen folk songs, it is inherently a valuable academic treatise. Fortunately, its academic worth far transcends its unique status. Carefully footnoted and written with great sensitivity--at no point are we allowed to forget that the stories being told belong to the women who tell them--this book represents a great contribution not just to folklore from this region but to the study of folklore in general. I was surprised to read that Ms. Blackwell's background was in theater (and not anthropology), though this no doubt accounts in part for the way she was able to put her interviewees at their ease. A great book.

About the Author
Christopher G. Moore is a Canadian author of 22 novels, a non-fiction, one collection of interlocked short stories, and one book on Thai language. Oxford-educated, Moore was a law professor at the University of British Columbia for 10 years. His first book His Lordship's Arsenal was published in New York to a critical acclaim in 1985, when he decided to become a full-time writer.

Moore moved to Thailand in 1988 and from Bangkok continued to write literary and commercial fiction. He has attained somewhat of a cult status among his readers in Asia and Europe and has an increasingly strong following in North America. Moore is probably best known by his cult classics, Land of Smiles Trilogy, his behind-the-smiles study of his adopted country, Thailand, and his highly popular Vincent Calvino Private Eye series.

Boring 24/7

This is my 7th Vinnie Calvino novel, and I surely could have skipped it. For one, it has nothing to do with Pattaya, but mostly takes place in surrounding areas, including an upscale goat farm. We are led to believe that the story is of a dead spouse- suicide or murder? But author Moore rightly realizes that that story is going nowhere, so he lays on pages and pages of psychobabble about honesty and corruption and how the Thais are so much better at the wed of the two than we are. Why they are so inscrutable, a farang could never understand. Except that all of this is being spewed by a farang- the author. He then changes the story to up the ante considerably, and it proceeds in a most implausible way. This is the first time that I thought that Moore started the novel before he had his story.
And the lack of respect for the final publication says something too. Do the novels not get proofread? Typos abound. Every inside page promises us that we are reading Pattay 24/7. The cover, designed in 2010, six years after the novel was written, shows a woman's bare legs. What's that to do with the story? The cover blurb- "Think Dashiel Hammett in Bangkok." But why? The novel does not take place in Bangkok! Or in Pattaya, Pattay, or 24/7.It all incorporates the slop that is my seventh read of a Vinnie Calvino novel, my most disappointing one yet.

Good, but not his best

This story has a very entertaining finish, but drags a bit getting there. How ever, to say a Christopher G Moore -Calvino mystery is just good is still better than many. Worth reading the whole series.

Cute Way to Celebrate the Chinese Zodiac

This book automatically gets a +1 rating in my book for my son who was actually born in the year of the dragon. For parents trying to incorporate a little Chinese culture in their toddler, this is an extremely cute book. True to Joyce Wan's style, it features bright cute illustrations accompanied with a cute little saying. At the end of the book is a mirror that my 21 month old toddler loves. He always gets excited when he sees his face and unlike some "mirrors" in other toddler/baby books, the mirror in this book is really high quality and gives very little distortion. My only wish is that the illustrations has texture like the cover. My son touches the cover and feels the fun texture and keeps trying to feel the inside pages and is disappointed when he doesn't feel anything.

Really cute book with awesome illustrations!

My son and I love Joyce Wan's books, and this is definitely in her top 4. The only thing I don't like as much about this one is that instead of mimicking the format of her other books-- where each "page" is a 2-page spread-- this book has a different animal (lucky dragon, clever snake, playful puppy, etc.) on every SINGLE page. It means you get a lot more content, but I think it ends up being too much, especially for little ones who just want to enjoy the pictures. I think this could have easily been two books, and I would have liked that better. Other than that, I love it!

Adorable!

These books are adorable! I have the Lucky Little Dragon and the Cupcake versions. My son is 2 and I purchased a variety of books to fill up his shelf, as he is just getting interested in looking at books. There is no story line to this; it's just cute little phrases that a parent (or grandparent, etc) would say to a child. But the illustrations are too cute and really colorful. My little boy loves looking at them. The covers do seem kind of flimsy for a board book though; the front of mine was slightly bent just from shipping, but I would still recommend them to anyone looking for a cute addition to a toddler library.

Farnborough revisited

I have just finished reading Farnborough through time & what a trip down memory lane it proved to be. I "batched" in a flat at 203 Lynchford Rd for some 3yrs (1965 - 68)until I got married. We then rented the same flat for the first 3 yrs before moving to Basingstoke & eventually emigrating to Western Australia.

It was an absolute delight to read this well documented history of the 'old town".
