About the Author
Michael Davies, who lived from 1936-2004, was a Catholic writer who authored various works following the Second Vatican Council, in addition to unifying Una Voce America, a conservative group. Previously an Anglican, he converted to the Catholic Church in the 1950s, and went on to compose such works as The Liturgical Revolution, The Order of Melchisedech, Partisans of Error, For Altar and Throne, and The Wisdom of Adrian Fortescue. Upon Davies' death in 2004, Pope Benedict XVI called him a man of deep faith who was ready to embrace suffering. His Holiness went on to say, "...We can be confident that the Lord opened wide for him the gates of Heaven. We commend his soul to the Lord's mercy."

Development of the Roman Liturgy

In this well written booklet, Michael Davies does a wonderful job of giving a compact history of the Roman Rite Mass. His coverage takes us from the Last Supper to the Traditional Mass as it is said today. We also get an explanation on the origins of the Low Mass.

He goes over the reforms of Pope St. Gregory the Great and Pope St. Pius V. Which shows us how the liturgical texts were always treated with great respect and any changes were minor. And it remained so until 1970 when radical changes were made.

Read this book and you will gain an appreciation of the Traditional Mass, known as the Tridentine Mass.

Both History and Apology

Both a histiry and an apology (in the litereary/rhetorical sense), this very short (60 pages or so) book describes the evolution of the Tridentine Mass, as well as the explanation tracing it back to as early ast the 4th Century. The apologetics as it pertains to other rites, the Eastern Orthodox, the Protestant Reformation and the 1970 Novus Ordo make it much less of an unbiased history and much more of a religious book. If you have interest in the subject, it's an interesting background read.

Excellent overview

Davies is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in "Traditional" Catholicism in the English-speaking world over the past several decades. This overview, if oversimplified at times, provides the reader with a brief summary of the development of the Mass according to the Roman Rite from it's roots in Apostolic times through the Early Greats (Leo and Gregory), the Renaissance standardizations (Pius V) to the implementation of the Mass of Paul VI in 1970. A great introduction for the casual reader.

The Catholic Sanctuary and the Second Vatican Council would make an excellent follow up. At about $6 for both (less if purchased in bulk from the publisher directly) and about 100 pp. one cannot get a better, more affordable summary of the historic Mass of the Roman Rite or the present situation in which the Roman Rite finds itself.

About the Author
Dr Janusek is an archaeologist interested in the development of complex societies and cities in the South American Andes. His theoretical interests include: human agency/identity, power relations, urbanism, space and place, ritual practice, and household archaeology. He has worked in the Bolivian highlands since 1987, conducting research principally focused on Tiwanaku civilization and its precursors. He currently directs an interdisciplinary research project at the sites of Khonkho Wankane and Iruhito in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin (see http://antiquity.ac.uk/ProjGall/janusek/janusek.html). His publications include: Craft and Local Power (Latin American Antiquity 10, 1999), Out of Many, One (Latin American Antiquity 13, 2002), Tiwanaku and its Precursors (Journal of Archaeological Research 12, 2004), Household and City in Tiwanaku (in Andean Archaeology, Helaine Silverman ed., Blackwell 2004), five chapters in Tiwanaku and its Hinterland Vol. II (Alan Kolata ed., Smithsonian Institution, 2003), and The Changing 'Nature' of Tiwanaku Religion (World Archaeology 38, 2006). Over the course of the Hard Luck Hank series, the only things that remains the same are the protagonist, and the name of the city in which he stubbornly remains a landmark. Reluctantly at the heart of every major evolution of the space station Belvaille, Hank's greatest facet as the series's hero is how despite the changes that occur all around him, the major shifts in the dynamic of his setting, he remains immovably the same. Hank is Hank, and will always be Hank. His character is the (sometimes literally) immovable object around which every major event in the series finds itself orbiting. Rather than following along as a protagonist journey's through a story as they grow and change according to their circumstances, the Hard Luck Hank books show how entertaining it can be to watch as the circumstances are forced to change around the protagonist, turning the often formulaic, doctrinal flow of most stories on its ear in a great way. And, though he doesn't really change, throughout the story we continue to learn new things about who Hank is and has always been that keep the reader interested in the character as well as his ever changing home.

These books might not ever be featured in any overly self-important critic's list of must-reads or forced on future students of literature as cultural classics, but they've certainly earned a place in my personal hall of fame as one of the most thoroughly entertaining reads I've ever had the pleasure of burning away free time with. I highly encourage you to pick them up, if for no other reason than so that I can possibly bump into someone else out there to rave about them with.

another fantastic addition to a great series

This series has kept my attention, interest, and tickled my funny bone to no end, and that's just it, I never want it to end! Love the characters the author has built up (there are some good short stories too) and the world they exist in. What a great series that was born of crowd funding, if you want a book with great characters, great setting, humor, action, and the occasional sad times, check out book one. Read them all and meet me here for the latest one, you will not be disappointed.

"Stinkel Pie" - Hank

If you have read the previous Hank books you will not be disappointed by this latest addition. The only time you will want to put this book down is when you are trying to not hyperventilate from laughing. There are some points in this book where I believe, personally, it is only safe to continue to read while sitting on the toilet for fear of losing control of your bowels. I only wish that there was a greater explanation for the bald men.

Watching her father sink into a deep depression, her mother embrace religion, and her sister struggles to escape into an early admission college, Toswiah/Evie is forced to reinvent herself as well. Sisi Aisha Johnson's sterling narration draws listeners deep into this introspective novel by Jacqueline Woodson (Putnam, 2002) that attempts to answer the question, "How do you know who you are when your past has been taken away?" Poignant and pensive

The descriptions make me want to love this book - the color of each person's skin, the way the mother's hands knead the bread, the thought of having no floor to stand on. These are all wonderful. The gradual development of Toswiah/Evie into her own person is also nice, although I thought she had it pretty much together, even at the start. There isn't much action in this book, and sometimes I felt like the book's plot was over, even before the book had really started. You knew the family had to go into hiding; you knew the mother turned to religion. But the descriptive characteristics of each person carry a lot of the story along. They are worth savoring.

The book I read was Hush, By JacquelineWoodson. This book was a fictional, drama, ethinic book.The most obvious problem in the book was the family's race, being african american.

A summary of the book Hush would be based around a girl whose birthname is Toswiah, which is later changed to Evie when put into the witness protection program. Toswiah faced many problems in this novel. After being used to living in Colorado with her family, grandmother, and having her best friend live down the street, everything changed in a matter of a day. The day and event was a hard decision for her father, who was a police officer. He witnessed a rasict homicide on a teenage boy by his two white partners. After days of thinking of what he should do, he came forward to the police department, who witnessed and interrogated witnesses. In the mean time, the two cops harassed, and called the family. The witness protection program relocated their family, giving them new identities, and they could not come into contact with any of their family or friends from Colorado, until the police department arrested the two cops. Toswiah is forced to reinvent herself and not think of the past at all.

The book was interesting becuase it shows how certain people, even cops, deal with racial problems and how it affects their families. One wrong move by anyone, can affect all parties involved. The book was also inspiring because it shows how a young girl could be so courageous and have the ability to put up with leaving family and friends, to reinvent herself and not say anything about her past.

Possibilities and questions the book raises are how did the family and friends live after they left Colorado? What ever happened to the two cops and their families? How the whole family is affected by this tradgedy? It only fully explains Toswiah and her sisters thoughts and views, but leaves out the effects this had on everyone else.

Arguments I would have against the author would be Toswiah shouldn't, have to deal with rascism and relocation. This also lead to her fathers attempted suicide and the emotional breakdown of her mother,all of which is alot for a child of her age.

The book taught me and affected me by showing me how a person, even a cop cant be trusted. They can give you one impression and totally change it in a matter of seconds. Which can affect the lives of everyday people. It shows how rascism and still exists in society, regardless of the occupation. It also shows how a young girl can deal with adult like problems at a young age, and adapt to different things when needed to.

My overall opinion of the book was it was a very good, interesting, inspiring, and a book some people can relate to, because we are all aware that these problems exist, but not to this extent. Advice I have for potential readers of this book would be to look and see how a young person can relate to such harsh opinions and impressions we have in our own society, and how every little thing can affect a person no matter how minimal.

Witness Protection Program

It has never really mattered to Toswiah's family that they are one of the few black families in town. Her father is a police officer, her mother a teacher, and her older sister is a popular cheerleader. Toswiah has a best friend and she loves Colorado. Everything is going well for them. Even though her father is the only black police officer on the force, the rest of the police officers are as close as family to them.

Then her father witnesses two white officers shoot a black teenager. They say they thought he was in a gang and was reaching for a gun. Toswiah's father saw that his hands were fully visible, up in the air, and the police officers shot him anyway. He agonizes over the decision he has to make. Should he testify in this trial and help to put his fellow police officers in jail? Or should he follow the code of the police officers and turn the other way, pretending he didn't see anything? He decides to testify.

Suddenly Toswiah's world is turned upside-down. Her family leaves their home in the middle of the night. She will now be known as Evie, and moved to a different place to start over as a different person, telling lies instead of history. Being in the witness protection program is hard on the entire family. Toswiah's mother has found religion and lost herself. Toswiah's father sits all day by the window, feeling like he somehow made the wrong decision. Toswiah's sister is angry at everyone, especially her father, and is doing all that she can to get away. Toswiah is proud of her father and thinks he did the right thing, but she is sad that everything is falling apart. Can this family come together and survive this?

I liked Toswiah and her narration, and I liked the flashbacks to the times before the family had to move. I was disappointed in the parents, though. They were set up as such strong people and such good parents before the trial. But then when their children needed them to be stable and supportive, they completely fell apart. It didn't seem to fit with their earlier personalities.

This series is a favorite

My 10 year old son has enjoyed the "100 Most...." series since we first discovered them when he was in second grade. Whenever a new version comes out, we have to order it. He reads and re-reads these books regularly and loves to "enlighten me" with their "interesting" factoids. Definitely a great series for boys!

Mary McCarthy teaches beginner-to-advanced garment sewing at sewing guilds, fabric stores, sewing conferences, and online classes. She has also written two previous books on sewing techniques.

Helpful. Useful. I'm coming back to sewing with a new sewing machine and serger after many years so there have been a lot of changes and I have forgotten much. Refreshing and re-educating. Many "A-ha" moments in this book as I learn and re-learn. Thank you, Mary McCarthy.

What a great resource for those who are into sewing. I was intrigued by the question and answer format and since my daughter is an amature seamstress, I bought for her.
